Indian style tomato and cucumber salad – fresh with some spice and Indian flavour. Let me show you how easy this one is……

What is Kachumber Salad?

It is basically a tomato and cucumber salad, Indian Style! This salad is so easy, delivers in flavour, and is a great side dish to any Indian meal. Refreshing and crisp it can even be enjoyed on its own!

Ingredients

  1. Tomatoes. Tomatoes are a shining ingredient in this recipe so try to pick juicy ripe tomatoes so you can enjoy this recipe to the fullest.
  2. Red Onion. Red onions are mellower than their white counterparts and I prefer to use them for this recipe. If you like the harsher flavour of white onions, feel free to swap them in the recipe.
  3. Cucumbers. Fresh crisp cucumber gives this salad a nice bite and adds to its refreshing flavour
  4. Garam Masala. This Indian Spice adds flavour and gives this salad an Indian-style taste. If you don’t have Garam Masala, you can try adding some of your favourite curry powder or add some cumin and coriander to get your desired taste.
  5. Green Chillies. I love the extra little bit of heat a chopped green chilli brings but feel free to use red chilli instead for milder heat or alternatively no chilli if you don’t want any heat in your salad.
  6. Lemon Juice. I love the freshness that a squeeze of lemon juice adds to my recipes and this recipe is no exception. It adds zing and brings the salad to life!
  7. Coriander. A final sprinkling of coriander adds that extra fresh note to the salad and contributes lots of flavour.

How to make Kachumber Salad

This salad is easy peasy to make. Chop your ingredients and gently stir to combine and you have a tasty salad in no time! You can chop the ingredients to your desired size – I like mine fairly chunky but feel free to experiment. Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 2 large ripe tomatoes diced
  • 1/3 large cucumber diced
  • ½ red onion diced
  • Small handful of chopped coriander
  • 1 small green chilli
  • ½ teaspoon garam masala
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Juice of ½ lemon

Instructions

  • Dice tomato, cucumber and onion and gently stir in a bowl to combine
  • Finely chop green chilli and coriander and add to mixture along with lemon juice
  • Sprinkle over the garam masala and season with salt and pepper
  • Give one final stir before serving and adjust seasoning if necessary
