Why You’ll Love This Recipe
I love sweet potatoes. They are a staple in my kitchen—they’re hearty, naturally sweet, and you can do a million things with them. Once I discovered a hack to make these little beauties nice and crispy in the air fryer, I never looked back…
These air fryer sweet potato cubes are golden on the outside, fluffy on the inside. Whether you’re looking for a healthy snack, a simple side, or meal prep magic, this recipe’s got you covered—no deep fryer in sight
Ingredients
- 1 large sweet potato, peeled
- 1 tablespoon olive oil or another neutral oil
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 -1 tbsp cajun spice (depending how spicy you like it)
- Freshly cracked black pepper, to taste
- Optional garnish: chopped parsley, a squeeze of lime, or crumbled feta
Equipment
- Air fryer
- Sharp chef’s knife & cutting board
- Large mixing bowl
- Silicone spatula or tongs
Precook Your Potatoes
This is the game changer for making crispy air fryer sweet potato cubes. How many times have you made sweet potatoes and they come out soggy and limp? They are difficult to get right but with this little hack, you can get crispy golden sweet potatoes every time. Parboiling the potatoes lets them get evenly cooked first, then the air fryer can concentrate on crisping them up!
Step-by-Step Instructions
Prep & Cube the Sweet Potatoes
Peel and cut the sweet potatoes into ¾-inch cubes—uniform size helps them cook evenly.

Boil the cubes until fork tender
Precook the cubes in simmering water for around 7-8 minutes until soft and tender
Cool the cubes down before applying seasoning
Place the cubes onto a baking sheet/tray and let them cool down before proceeding to cook in the air fryer.
Season the Cubes
In a large bowl, toss sweet potato cubes with oil, salt, cajun and a few cracks of black pepper.
Use your hands or a spatula to coat evenly—no clumps!
Preheat Your Air Fryer
Set it to 190°C and preheat for 3 minutes. Trust me, preheating makes a difference for texture and crispiness
Air Fry in Batches
Arrange cubes in a single layer—don’t overcrowd the fryer as this can stop them turning out crispy
Cook at 190°C for 12 minutes, shaking regularly for even cooking
Craving extra crisp? Crank it up to 200°C for the final few minutes or use the extra crisp function if your air fryer has it

Tip: Shake or flip every 3–4 minutes to keep browning even.
Check for Doneness
Look for crispy edges and a golden colour.
If they’re still soft or pale, air fry 2–3 more minutes.
Serve & Garnish
Transfer to a serving dish. Garnish with fresh parsley, lime juice, or crumbled feta—just enough to brighten them up!
Flavour Variations to Try
- Maple Chili: Toss with 1 tbsp pure maple syrup + a pinch of cayenne.
- Herby & Garlicky: Swap paprika for 1 tsp Italian seasoning + ½ tsp onion powder.
- Sweet & Savory: Drizzle with honey mustard glaze right after cooking.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use frozen sweet potato cubes?
Yes-just add 2–3 extra minutes at 400°F and shake often to break up any clumps.
How do I store leftovers?
Let them cool fully, then store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. Re-crisp in the air fryer at 375°F for 3–4 minutes.
Why are my cubes soggy?
Moisture is the enemy of crispiness—make sure to pat the cubes dry before seasoning.
Can I double the recipe?
Absolutely. Just cook in multiple batches to keep them crisp.
