Why Make Oat Flour Cookies
Oat flour is a great alternative to regular plain flour. It gives these cookies a distinct oaty nutty flavour, plus the added extra benefit of being good for you – loaded with fibre and good for your cholesterol!
Oat flour is also a great alternative for those following a gluten-free diet as oats are naturally gluten-free (as long as they say so on the packet) – result! Oats that are processed in factories with other grains can get contaminated with gluten, so look for gluten-free status on the label. These cookies are
- Nutritious
- full of fibre
- Nutty flavour and texture
- Healthy alternative to traditional choc chip cookies
Ingredients
Oat Flour – this can be store-bought or made at home (see below) and gives the cookies a lovely oaty flavour and rough texture.
Brown and white sugar – brown sugar has more flavour and helps to keep the cookies moist with a hint of chew to them
Bicarb – this helps to give the cookies a little lift when baking
Milk Chocolate – I have opted to use milk chocolate but in my other chocolate chip cookie recipe, I use a mix of dark and milk chocolate. Feel free to try what you like best!
Egg – to bind all the dry ingredients together
Vanilla Extract – good quality vanilla to provide flavour to the cookies
Unsalted butter – to help bind everything together and give great flavour to the cookies
Homemade Oat Flour Versus Store Bought
If you are looking to make these cookies at home but have no oat flour – you can make oat flour yourself! There is no difference between store bought and homemade oat flour as it is just oats ground up finely. If you have a good blender, try blitzing your oats. When you get to a flour-like consistency and you are ready to go – simples!
